Decarbonization of Mobile Machine Systems - DECARBO

MAIN OBJECTIVE

The project will deal with most of the mobile machine manufacturers in Finland and addressing their needs and opportunities in the complex mix of energy supply options and operating environments. The options will be mapped and reviewed both locally and globally and match them to various powertrain and energy storage options.
The goal of DECARBO project is to find the most economically viable, cost effective and productive ways to decarbonize mobile machine systems and create profitable business to the machine system suppliers in a rapidly changing environment.

OBJECTIVES
in more detail

DECARBO project will reflect on the energy markets as well as the regulatory scene. Technologically it will evaluate alternative power options for on-board machine applications and furthermore develop off-board modular energy supply concepts by integrating multiple energy sources. Based on the market and technology studies it will create new business models to address customer values.
The sub objectives of DECARBO are:
  1. To present a global investigation of safety rules, regulations, policies, and standardization of mobile machinery.
  2. To explore the visions, preferences and beliefs of different stakeholders and decision makers by bringing them in a common platform.
  3. To identify the optimal solution in terms systemic viability and total cost of ownership for different sectors of mobile machines.
  4. To design and conceptualize different power generation and energy use options for mobile machines utilizing data-based modeling and simulations.
  5. To demonstrate the proof of concept of multiple energy source power unit and to validate simulations and calculations.
  6. To identify key performance indicators for customer values and develop new business models and case studies.
  7. Formulate a matrix of different cases from on-grid to off-grid, powertrains and energy supply mix options for various applications and operating environments to find the best solutions for the case combinations and projected market environments.
  8. At the end of the project the big picture with all alternatives has been created for the energy logistics and power options of future mobile machines.
Objectives in more detail

RESEARCH / FOCUS AREAS

  • Quantification of global scenarios in terms of geopolitical risks, emission policy, trading, and flexibility in global market structures of mobile machines.
  • Evaluation of novel concepts and designs through experimental research. All feasible alternative power solutions are investigated in considering the total lifecycle cost of energy carrier and end-user applications.
  • Multiple energy source demonstrator with modular design as a powering unit to support the charging infrastructure.
  • Development of customer centric business models adapting to new technologies and identifying the best customer values.
  • Strong increase of networking and strengthening of international partnerships globally in mobile machine industry
