We had the pleasure of hosting the Annual Seminar on Zero-Emission Heavy-Duty Transport at Innopoli Espoo. The event brought together industry professionals, policymakers, and researchers to discuss the latest advancements and strategies in zero-emission heavy-duty transport.
The seminar kicked off with an opening session where Jarkko Vesa from the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment of Finland discussed the value network, challenges, and opportunities in zero-emission transport. Mikko Pihlatie then introduced the program of the day, followed by a policy update from Saara Jääskeläinen and Sara Österberg of the Finnish Ministry of Transport and Communications, who highlighted actions driving the decarbonisation of heavy-duty transport. Harri Nieminen from VTT presented the SIX HOVE roadmap and position paper, and Tuukka Vainio from Business Finland discussed the way forward towards heavy-duty transport electrification.
After a coffee break and networking session, the seminar continued with insights from industry and pilot projects. Pasi Salmela from Rauanheimo and Jukka Pellinen from Keulink shared their experience with heavy-duty retrofits. Kari Mäkynen from Posti discussed Posti's strategy for zero-emission transports, and Minna van der Most from SSAB, along with Jussi Saukkonen from Kuljettava Oy, talked about SSAB's industrial transports. Juho Laine from SISU presented battery trucks with Fuel Cell range extender piloting in the ESCALATE project.
Before lunch the companies were awarded with diplomas as an acknowledgement for their commitment and time used for the cluster activities. The collaboration has been rewarding for all partners.
Following a lunch break where zero-emission trucks were on display outside, the seminar resumed with discussions on megawatt charging in the ESCALATE and MACBETH projects by Ville Naumanen from Kempower and Marko Antila from VTT. Joona Töyräs from Plugit discussed the development of the Plugit HDV charging network, and Jani Lindroos from the Port of Helsinki addressed the challenges and opportunities in organizing charging for transport electrification in ports.
The final session focused on research results. Antonio Fadel da Costa and Nino Chkhartishvili from VTT presented a spatio-temporal charging demand analysis for Finland. Mehdi Jahangir Samet from TAU discussed the trip chain analysis of electric truck charging demands, and Mikaela Ranta from VTT analyzed energy consumption for HDV versus GVW and conditions. Alex Aushev from VTT discussed scalable EV charging demand forecasting for heavy-duty fleets using the WeTRaC tool. The session concluded with summaries of MSc theses from TAU and VTT, covering topics such as the production cost of charging as a service by Niilo Kantoniemi, battery swapping technology by Sepideh Salehi Barzegar, and truck use patterns and electric truck charging by Pekka Heininen.
The seminar concluded with remarks from Johannes Hyrynen of VTT, who provided insights on the way forward and continuation of the cluster.
The Annual Seminar on Zero-Emission Heavy-Duty Transport was a fantastic opportunity to gain valuable insights and network with key players in the sector. We look forward to continuing these important discussions and driving forward the transition to zero-emission heavy-duty transport.
