Success story - TAMK, Tampere University of Applied Sciences

Virtual prototyping and FieldLab pilot to improve productivty

Virtain Muovityö Oy (VMT) is an SME company located at Virrat, Finland. Their expertise is in plastics and the company has designed and manufactured technical plastic products for almost 50 years.

During autumn 2020 VMT and Tampere University of Applied Sciences (TAMK) formed a joint project targeted to further improve VMT’s already partly robotized production.

During the project a collaborative robot pilot setup was built at TAMK’s FieldLab premises. Also a virtual prototype was built in a simulation software. Mimiging the process in physical pilot helped researchers to do findings even on very small though significant details, and process simulation provided valuable information on the overall feasibility of the proposed solutions. Collaboration and dialogue with the customer throughout the project assured well focused and beneficial results, ready for implementation.

“We are very happy with our collaboration with TAMK. This project didn’t only provide us new technical information, but also helped our personnel to see modern automation’s possibilities from a new viewpoint.” says Ms. Marja Mäkinen, VMT’s CEO.
